New warnings for persistent rain should be issued on Wednesday. Existing warnings are extended until Saturday. “Particular attention is paid to areas in the west and center of the country,” reports meteorologist Julia Tuschy.

The DWD expected precipitation amounts between 30 and 50 liters per square meter for Wednesday and Thursday. In mountainous areas – especially in busy areas – this can be 60 to 120 liters per square meter within 30 to 60 hours. This corresponds to about one-tenth to one-fifth of Berlin’s annual precipitation.

On Thursday, a new low called “Brigitta” will make its way from Brittany to northern Germany. “On Friday night, the area of ​​precipitation will expand to the west and northwest of Germany and will affect the northern half during Friday,” the meteorologist predicted.

Cold air will penetrate in the second half of the week. As a result, the precipitation changes to snow – initially mainly in the north of Schleswig-Holstein. “Due to the relatively warm floor coverings, widespread slipperiness should be limited,” Tuchy said. As the cold air spreads, several inches of fresh snow could fall in the north.

There have been widespread flooding in recent weeks, especially in northwestern Germany. The Weser and many smaller, little-known rivers burst their banks. In Lower Saxony, Prime Minister Stephan Weil spoke about the worst floods in the country’s history. (SDA)
