There was a lot of excitement about the spread of bed bugs in France a few months ago, and now hotels in Paris are preparing to combat the parasites in the run-up to the Summer Olympics. The newspaper “Le Parisien” reported that numerous insect control companies in the metropolitan area have already received increasing numbers of reservations for hotel rooms that can be inspected with sniffer dogs. Hoteliers go to great lengths to ensure their accommodations are free of bed bugs.
The hotels did not want negative advertising with a photo of a bedbug on a booking platform, so they organized a preventive check of the rooms, said the chairman of the Syndicate of Experts in the Detection of Bedbugs by Dogs. Sébastien Pizzocaro, to the newspaper. “In this way, pests can be detected early before the arrival of the large waves of tourists.” Approximately 30 euros was charged per room examined. If bed bugs are actually found, insect control officials can use a steam treatment to eradicate them.
The Summer Games are scheduled from July 26 to August 11, 2024, and the Paralympic Games will follow from August 28 to September 8, 2024.
Last summer there was a real hysteria about bed bugs in France. People increasingly reported the presence of suspected or actual bed bugs from trains, movie theaters and other places – often accompanied by photos of the parasites. As authorities recently announced, the number of bed bugs in France has actually increased in recent years. Between 2017 and 2022, an estimated eleven percent of all French households were affected by bed bugs.
Bed bugs, which virtually disappeared decades ago, are also a problem again in Germany, partly due to a lot of travel. The insects suck blood and live in inhabited, enclosed spaces. They hide in beds, furniture joints or cracks. Bed bugs are now resistant to virtually all over-the-counter insecticides. Professional help is therefore often required to eliminate these. (sda/dpa)
