A passenger plane caught fire while landing at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. An explosive fireball was seen as Japan Airlines (JAL) Flight 516 skidded down the runway. Reuters reported that there were 367 passengers on board.
The plane was said to be en route from New Chitose to Haneda. According to media reports, the passenger plane caught fire at 5:47 p.m. local time (9:47 a.m. Swiss time).
On Tuesday evening (local time), live images from the Japanese television channel TBS showed passengers leaving the plane via an emergency slide while the fire was extinguished. According to Reuters, all passengers were able to leave the plane. It is not yet known whether there have been any injuries.
The plane caught fire for an unknown reason. Citing the local fire brigade, Reuters reported that the plane may have collided with another Japanese Coast Guard plane on the runway.
The machine was badly damaged – photos show the plane breaking in two. The firefighting work is still in full swing.
