Can Donald Trump (77) run for re-election as US president, even though he incited his supporters after losing the election? Maine’s top elections official, Democrat Shenna Bellows, 58, says: No!
She announced the decision Thursday, arguing in a similar manner to the Colorado Supreme Court, which reached the same decision last week.
Maine Secretary of State Bellows wrote in her statement: “I do not come to this conclusion lightly. Democracy is sacred… I am aware that no Secretary of State has ever denied a presidential candidate access to the ballot based on Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment. However, I am also clear that no presidential candidate has ever participated in an insurrection.”
Bellows’ statement said her decision will not be implemented until the U.S. Supreme Court issues a ruling. This is done “in view of the short timeframe, the new constitutional questions, the importance of this case and the upcoming deadlines for the preparation of the elections”. (neo)
