On the last day of the family vacation in October, Tyler Skee (13) got a henna tattoo. The 8-inch dragon motif adorned the teen’s forearm. But the joy of the tattoo quickly turned to pain and shock.
Blisters and scabs formed under the tattoo on the 13-year-old Briton’s arm. But that wasn’t enough: the rash spread all over his body. Because the boy with autism did not dare to say anything, the family only noticed it six days after returning from vacation.
His mother, Chloe Skee, told Metro newspaper that her son simply endured the pain because he thought tattoos had to hurt.
Tyler was subsequently medically examined several times, most recently at a burn clinic. There he was given various steroid creams and antiviral medications. Although the wound has not yet completely healed, the doctors are confident.
But where did the burns come from? Doctors suspect the chemical p-phenylenediamine (PPD) caused the violent reaction. PPD is often incorporated into black henna to further intensify the color. In the EU, its use in skin care products is banned because it is a highly sensitizing substance that can cause skin allergies for the first time. The henna powder itself has no skin sensitizing properties.
“If I had known then what I know now, he would never have had a henna tattoo,” the mother says indignantly. To draw attention to the incident, she contacted the tattoo artist. She doesn’t want others to experience what happened to her son. But so far she has not received an answer. (gs)
