This spring was a special experience for Blick writer editor Raoul Schwinnen: He had the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Porsche 911 Dakar in the Moroccan desert.

Porsche 911 and Citroën 2CV – two fascinating motoring legends that celebrate their 60th and 75th birthdays respectively this year. And I was able to experience this with extreme variability at two events this year.

At the beginning of the year, during a two-day expedition in the Moroccan desert, I had the opportunity to see with my own eyes the off-road capabilities of the Porsche 911 Dakar, limited to 2,500 units and priced at just under 270,000 francs. At the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Of course, surfing on the dunes is great fun with the 240 km/h off-road 911, which has 480 hp and 570 Nm of torque and reaches 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. The question remains, though: why does Porsche produce such a car; Are there more affordable SUVs? Official answer: “Referring to Porsche’s first victory in the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1984, we wanted to prove that even after forty years there are almost no limits to the 911 concept.” Unofficial answer: Because it sells. All 2,500 911 Dakars built are long gone.

Speaking of sales: the Citroën 2CV – or Döschwo – sold more than five million units from 1948 until the end of production in 1990. The French Volkswagen still maintains its cult status today and has a large fan base. I can see this with my own eyes at the world meeting of 2CV friends in Jura in the summer. Around 3,500 Döschwos arrived from all over the world – including the world’s longest 2CV – a six-seater stretch duck from Germany. I was happy to let the owner, a mathematics teacher from Germany, take me on a tour through the streets of Delsberg and share his passion for Döschwo.
