Baghdad confirmed one dead and 18 injured in the US attack

Iraq confirmed today the death of one person and the injury of 18 others, including several civilians, in US attacks last morning on pro-Iranian groups in the Arab country, in retaliation for the launch of drones and missiles at US bases in the territory. Iraqi.

In a statement, the Iraqi government condemned the US attacks, which it considers a “hostile, non-constructive act that does not serve common interests”, while it is “unacceptable” “attacks on the headquarters of foreign diplomatic missions” and “bases with the presence of military advisers from friendly countries”.

“The government of Iraq confirms that (…) it strongly opposes attacks by some elements on the headquarters of foreign diplomatic missions or places where military advisers from friendly countries are located.s”, the press release states.

These attacks, by pro-Iranian groups, “were previously diagnosed as hostile acts, they affect the sovereignty of the Iraqi state and it is unacceptable that they be committed under any circumstances or under any name or justification,” he stressed.

“At the same time, the Government of Iraq condemns what happened early today, in which Iraqi military facilities were attacked by the US under the pretext of retaliation, resulting in the martyrdom of one member and the wounding of 18 other people, including civilians,” he added.

He US Central Command (CENTCOM) said today that it attacked “multiple” facilities in Iraq used by Hezbollah’s pro-Iran militia Kataib (Brigades) and other affiliated “terrorist” groups in retaliation for drone strikes on coalition bases in Iraq and Syria.

CENTCOMin his X account, he said those militias attacked coalition forces in Erbil, northern Iraq, leaving “several people injured.”

“This is a clear hostile act (against Iraqi territory) and is not constructive. It does not serve long-term common interests in establishing security and stability and is against the stated desire of the American side to strengthen relations with Iraq,” said the Iraqi. The government emphasized, according to the press release.

“This step harms bilateral relations, complicates the means of reaching an agreement through joint dialogue to end the presence of the international coalition and, above all, represents an unacceptable violation of Iraqi sovereignty,” he added.

According to the White House, last night’s attacks on pro-Iranian groups in Iraq were ordered by US President Joe Biden after he was informed that three US soldiers had been injured in the incidents, one of them seriously.

The Iranian-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq has claimed responsibility for more than 80 attacks on US targets in Syria and Iraq since mid-October, in response to US “unwavering” support for Israel and Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
