This year in some cantons you only need three days of holiday to get a week off between Christmas and New Year. Many people take advantage of this to spend a few days in the mountains. Especially since the weather is great!

Thanks to the precipitation at the beginning of winter, there are good conditions in many places for skiing and snowboarding and for taking part in the winter sports season. Blick gives an overview of where a day on the ski slopes really pays off and where the season gets off to a slow start.

Zermatt

The ski area in Zermatt VS reaches almost 4,000 meters; This makes it the highest ski area in the Alps, according to the company. No wonder there is usually a lot of snow there compared to other ski areas: According to the ski area comparison platform “Skiresort.ch” there is 2 meters of snow at the highest altitudes of the ski area. This is currently the highest value in Switzerland. According to the information received from the mountain railways, 254 of the 360 kilometers of track are open and all 45 systems are in operation.

Samnaun/Ischgl

If you choose to look east, you will find relatively more snow at Silvretta Arena. Tourism experts say that the snow thickness on the mountain is currently 160 cm and the last snowfall was 3 days ago. 90 percent of the tracks are open. The ski area has 239 kilometers of pistes, making it one of the largest in Switzerland; Therefore, winter sports enthusiasts are now getting their money’s worth, even if not all slopes are suitable for skiing yet.

Davos Monastery

In some ski areas in the Davos-Klosters region, such as Rinerhorn and Schatzalp, 100 percent of the slopes are already open. Individual ski slopes are still closed in Parsenn, Jakobshorn and the Madrisa ski area. Many cross-country ski trails in Davos and Klosters are also open. The mountain railways website says “Condition: Best”.

flumserberg

The ski area above Lake Walen is popular for day trips among Zurich residents. It is significantly inferior to the ski areas in Graubsunu, Valais and the Bernese Oberland. Accordingly, there is currently only 80 centimeters of snow. However, those responsible are used to dealing with little snow: 62 of the 65 kilometers of pistes are passable.

Adelboden-Lenk

In the partly low-lying Adelboden-Lenk BE ski area, the situation is not so bright: there is 90 centimeters of snow and, according to the “Skiresort.ch” comparison platform, 35 of the 86 kilometers of pistes are open. – less than half. But according to a sample made on Tuesday afternoon, the day ticket for Wednesday costs 80 francs. Adelboden-Lenk has a dynamic pricing model. But paying too much and having to choose from only a few pistes is not well received by the guests: Flims Laax Falera GR and Andermatt UR had already learned this during the Christmas holidays.

Hoch-Ybrig

Those in charge proudly announce on their website: “All systems working.” However, when looking at accessible pistes, a slightly different picture emerges: 16 of 22 pistes are open, which corresponds to 58 percent according to “Skiresort.ch”. Due to its location, the Schwyz ski area is particularly popular among Zurich residents; They can get here in less than an hour by car. Traffic jams (which are inevitable during the holiday season) are not included. Since the tracks are not fully opened yet, there is a risk of traffic congestion on the tracks.

toggenburg

Even day trippers in Toggenburg are not yet getting their money’s worth: only 13 of 23 pistes are open in the Chäserrugg ski area in Unterwasser SG. It’s also just one of two toboggan runs and two of eight cross-country ski runs.

In the Wildhaus ski area next door, only 8 of 15 ski slopes are open, so the choice is slim. Particularly sad: Just a few years ago, winter sports enthusiasts in the region could choose all the slopes from Unterwasser to Wildhaus with a single ticket. However, a dispute between mountain railway operators caused the ski area to be divided into two.
