Two former world-class boxers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko say they have purchased at least 200 drones, which they are handing over to the Ukrainian army. “I have received the next batch of FPV drones that I ordered together with my brother Wladimir. The 100 birds will go to the 53rd brigade in Avdiivka,” Vitali Klitschko, also mayor of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, wrote on Facebook on Friday.
FPV drones are aircraft that provide the operator with a camera image. The abbreviation stands for ‘First Person View’, which in German means ‘from your own perspective’. These are commercially available devices that are also used by private individuals for filming. For use in war, they are often used for reconnaissance. But they can also carry a small explosive and then attack enemy targets like kamikaze drones. However, its range is shorter than that of cannons and its controls can be jammed by enemy electronic signals.
Klitschko also announced that he would request additional money from the budget of the city of Kiev to purchase such drones. Several million Ukrainian Greven have already been used for this purpose. 1,550 FPV drones and 200 quadcopters were purchased.
According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine is increasingly relying on all kinds of drones to defend itself against the Russian invasion. “This is a clear priority of the state and a very concrete way to save the lives of our soldiers,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. announced on Wednesday.
During a meeting with the government and army in Kiev, he discussed which drones were in storage and what was needed at the front. “The logistics will be faster,” the president said. They are also working on improving the effectiveness of drones. The government’s goal is to build a million drones next year.
