Surfing Santa Clauses raised money for charity in the American state of Florida. On the beach of the city of Cocoa Beach, south of the Cape Canaveral spaceport, dozens of surfers in neoprene suits and Santa Claus costumes took to the sea on Sunday to surf the waves. With the ‘Surfing Santas’ campaign they raised money for the non-governmental organization Grind for Life, which supports cancer patients, and for the local surfing museum.
Before Christmas Eve, thousands of spectators gathered on the beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast, many of them also in Christmas costumes. Volunteers sold T-shirts and raffle tickets to raise money.
“Surfing Santas” dates back to 2009, when Cocoa Beach resident George Trosset saw a television commercial showing a group of surfers dressed as Santa Claus. Trosset then bought an old red coat, turned it into a Christmas costume and went surfing with his son dressed as an elf. A local photographer captured the moment and published the image in the press.
“In the second year we had 19 Santa Clauses, in the third year we had 80. And now look,” Trosset, now 70, told the AFP news agency. “There are thousands of people here.” It’s exciting to see what this ‘dumb little thing’ has developed into.
