Palestinians in the Gaza Strip who were temporarily detained and brought to Israel for interrogation have strongly criticized Israel’s trial and interrogation methods. During the four weeks of his captivity he was tortured. a resident of the Gaza Strip named Brahim told the German news agency.
In response to a request, the Israeli military said it is currently temporarily detaining and interrogating people suspected of involvement in terrorist activities in combat zones in the Gaza Strip. Bystanders would eventually be released. The military rejected allegations of mistreatment: “The detained persons will be treated in accordance with international law.”
Brahim, who comes from Beit Lahia, does not see it that way. On the way to Israel, he and dozens of other people in his neighborhood were blindfolded and had their hands tied, he said. The Palestinians also had to bow their heads as they traveled in a military truck. “We didn’t know if we would be killed or what the army would do to us.” Brahim was also very concerned about his wife and children. He and other prisoners also had to take off their clothes again and again.
The military explained the allegations:
The clothing is not immediately returned to the detainees because it is suspected that knives could be hidden in it. “If it is possible, the detainees will get their clothes back.”
The Israeli officials who interrogated him in Arabic asked him hundreds of questions about Hamas, its leaders, activities and the tunnels in the Gaza Strip, Brahim said. “In the interrogation room I was subjected to various types of physical and psychological torture.” He did protest his innocence. He was sometimes accused of lying and was often beaten.
After several weeks, the Israeli army returned him to the Gaza Strip. On the way back, soldiers also beat him and threatened to kill him soon. Not all of Brahim’s statements could be independently verified.
A 39-year-old mother of five from the city of Gaza said she was also abused in captivity in Israel. ‘Men and women of the Israeli army beat me all over my body’ Hind, who did not want to give her last name, told dpa. She was questioned by Israeli forces about her neighbors. “They know very well that I am not politically active, but they deliberately humiliated me and all the other prisoners,” she said. During their three weeks in Israeli custody, detainees also complained about not having access to food, water and toilets. This information also could not be independently verified.
The Israeli army announced on Saturday that it has arrested a total of more than 700 members of terrorist organizations from the Gaza Strip for questioning. Images of Palestinian prisoners in the Gaza Strip wearing only their underwear had recently raised concerns about Israel’s arrest procedures and raised questions about possible rights violations or degrading treatment.
The Gaza war was sparked by the worst massacre in Israel’s history, which Hamas terrorists and other extremist groups carried out in Israel on October 7. (saw/sda/dpa)
