The United States again asked on Wednesday for more time to reach a compromise. If the council agrees, the vote can take place on Thursday evening (CET).

The text submitted by the United Arab Emirates calls, among other things, for a suspension of violence in the Gaza Strip to allow increased humanitarian aid deliveries to more than a million Palestinians in need. Until recently, members of the 15-member Security Council had tried to prevent a veto from Israel’s ally, the US.

According to reports, leading US diplomats are prepared to abstain after negotiators made many concessions to the United States during deliberations. But US President Joe Biden made the decision to veto after a conversation with UN Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield. According to information from US diplomatic circles to the German news agency, Thomas-Greenfield traveled to Washington on Tuesday evening for a previously planned dinner.

The humanitarian situation of the more than two million people in the Gaza Strip is dramatic. “After ten weeks of crisis in Gaza, half of the population is now hungry and has little access to food, water and shelter,” the World Food Program (WFP) recently announced. According to diplomats, the White House was particularly bothered by the United Nations’ review of aid supplies, as provided for in the draft resolution: Israel wants to have control over imports into the Gaza Strip.
