Laurence St-Germain was injured during training.

Last winter, Laurence St-Germain (29) celebrated the greatest success of her career when she sensationally became world champion in slalom.

Before this season she was still struggling with financial problems. Only with the help of a fundraising appeal and sponsors did she raise the 20,000 Canadian dollars (the equivalent of about 13,000 francs) her association needed so she could be part of the team. Apparently enough money has been raised. St-Germain has competed in all three slaloms so far, finishing 42nd, 7th and 14th.

Only twisted during training

There will be no further results for the time being. As the Canadian announced on social media, she was injured. “I really exhausted myself training last week and since my ankle was a bit affected I will have to wear a different type of boot for a while,” she captioned a photo of herself strength training. But there are crutches next to her and her left foot is in a splint.

It happened during a slalom training in Pozza di Fassa (Italy), where Wendy Holdener (30) suffered a broken ankle. «I hit the pole on the wrong side and my ski got stuck. This caused my ankle to be sprained,” St-Germain describes the incident to the Canadian newspaper La Presse. Fortunately, the binding of her ski came loose in time, otherwise “it could have ended very badly.”

She escapes with a partial tear of a ligament in her ankle. She now has to immobilize her foot for at least two weeks. She is happy that the injury does not mean the end of the season. But now patience is required. Her goal is to be back at the start in the night slalom in Flachau (Austria) in mid-January. “It’s one of my favorite races,” said St-Germain.

Despite everything, she can find positive things about her injury. For the first time in seven years, she celebrates Christmas at home with her family. (beer)
