Four years ago, a speeding incident took place in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate with serious consequences. Arif A.* (23) races on a national highway near Mannheim in his father’s BMW. When the speedometer showed 204 km/h, he lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. Enes K. (†18) and Damon S. (†19), who were passengers, died in the accident. Enes’ older brother Ömer (23) survives seriously injured and now needs care.

As the newspaper ‘Bild’ now reports, Arif A. could soon be behind the wheel again. “He already wrote to his friends that he was happy that he could press the accelerator again,” the newspaper quoted Dominique S., the mother of the deceased Damon.

After the crash, the young driver got away with a fine. The judiciary labeled his fatal ride as a “temporary failure of a novice driver”. The punishment: six months in prison with probation, a fine of 2,000 euros to a social institution and a driving ban for one year. The young man was traumatized, insightful and had not yet come to criminal attention, according to officials’ reasons for the lenient sentence.

“No normal life anymore”

But now research by the lawyer of the parents of one of the deceased shows: Arif A. had previously attracted attention because of his speed. That is why the Public Prosecution Service is reopening the procedure. Little comfort for the families of the victims. “The whole family knew how he drove and he was still allowed to use the car,” Dominique S. told “Bild”.

Ömer’s mother, who needs care, tells ‘Bild’ that she had to advance 170,000 euros to renovate the house for her son’s wheelchair. “The liability insurance pays out a maximum of ten million euros, but the nursing service alone costs 45,000 euros per month,” says Emine K. “We no longer have a normal life. Arif complained about having to take the bus to work. I would be happy if my children could still ride the bus.” (zis)
