The Federal Council will have more leeway in approving the export of war materials. In the future, it will be able to deviate from the current restrictions on such exports in exceptional cases. After the Council of States, the National Council also decided this.
Against the resistance of the SP, the Greens and the GLP, a centre-right coalition approved an amendment to the War Materials Act on Monday. A new Article 22b is added to this.
According to this article, the Federal Council will in the future be allowed to deviate from the previous approval criteria for the export of war materials abroad if there are extraordinary circumstances. This must also be necessary to protect the country’s foreign or security policy interests.
Opponents of this change say that two years ago Parliament deleted Article 22b from the Federal Council’s counter-proposal against the popular initiative “Against arms exports to countries with civil war”. This contributed decisively to the withdrawal of this referendum. It is undemocratic to introduce Article 22b. (SDA)
