Women have been offering sex in windows in Amsterdam for centuries – now the old city’s famous red light district is moving to an erotic center on the outskirts. The city council announced a choice of location on Monday, which is unlikely to end the controversial discussion about the plans.

The high-rise building with employment for about a hundred prostitutes, as well as restaurants, sex theaters and clubs, will be located in a district on the southern edge of the city. Residents and the EU medicines authority EMA, based there, have already protested.

“Finding a location for an erotic center is a difficult task,” according to the city council. Discussions with possible investors and operators of the center partly determined the choice of location. “Due to the enormous growth in tourism, the old city, and in particular the red light district, has been under pressure for years.” The erotic center is one of the measures to make the city center more liveable again. In exchange for the 100 planned places for sex workers in the center, a comparable number of jobs in the red light district would have to disappear.

Not much will remain of the revealing flair of the red-lit windows in ‘De Wallen’, as the old city district is called, in the sex flat. “The windows of the erotic center will be located exclusively inside the building,” the city council announced. All visitors enter through a secure entrance and must adhere to the house rules. “In this way we want to counter tourist tourism and keep disruptive groups at bay.”

The municipal council is expected to discuss the choice of location early next year. The city said it could take about seven years for the erotic center to open. (sda/dpa)
