Why Democrats are happy with Biden’s impeachment Germany and Britain call for a permanent ceasefire

When Bill Clinton became involved in 1998 over an affair with an aide, Republicans triumphed. They believed they had finally humiliated and tamed the hated Democratic president. It turned out to be a fatal misunderstanding: not only was Clinton acquitted by the Senate, the Grand Old Party (GOP) subsequently suffered a heavy defeat in the midterm elections.

History repeats itself, but not necessarily in the sense of Karl Marx as farce. The Republicans are again seeking impeachment, this time against Joe Biden. The House of Representatives, with all the votes of the Republican Party, approved a preliminary investigation into the impeachment proceedings. It will likely result in due process.

At first glance, Democrats seem outraged. For example, Jamie Raskin, a leading lawmaker and prosecutor in the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump, explains: “The preliminary investigation into an impeachment trial does not change the fact that months and endless investigations by the Republicans clearly revealed no misconduct by the Republicans have brought to light. President Biden “There are no wrongs that would warrant impeachment.”

Behind closed doors and of course without mentioning their names, the Democrats are downright happy with the actions of the Republicans. What could be better for them? President Biden is still in a voting hole. Bidenomics, his economic policy, delights all economists and people who know something about economics, but they have not yet reached Johnny Sixpack.

Moreover, the situation at the border with Mexico has actually become chaotic and the Biden administration has not yet found an answer to this problem. In short: there are enough points of attack to push Biden and the Democrats into a corner. Meanwhile, the Republicans decide to waste their narrow majority in the House of Representatives on something that will not succeed anyway – the Democratic-controlled Senate will never convict Biden – and that leaves Americans cold, except for the Trump pack. They don’t even want to hear the name Hunter Biden anymore.

Not only that, Raskin is right when he says the Republicans have no control. The only thing James Comer, the committee chairman, can produce as liquid evidence is a $4,000 check from Hunter Biden to his father. However, this is not participation in a dubious affair with Chinese, Ukrainians or Romanians, as the Republicans would have us believe, but rather the repayment of a loan that father Biden provided to his son for the purpose of buying a car.

Otherwise, MP Comer has mostly embarrassed himself to the core. His key witness, who would testify about father Biden’s alleged involvement in his son’s dubious actions, is missing. For good reasons: there are proceedings against him for illegal arms trade and money laundering with China.

Hunter Biden’s former partner testified that father Biden occasionally called his son in the presence of business friends. Platitudes aside, how does it work? What kind of weather are you having? – but he said nothing of substance. Moreover, David Weiss, a Trump-appointed prosecutor in the state of Delaware – he has now even been elevated to the status of special investigator – has found no evidence of a business relationship between father and son despite years of investigation.

Hunter Biden has now been charged with tax evasion and drug abuse, but his father also has nothing to do with it. Most Americans also understand that a father stands up for his son. After all, many families have a member addicted to drugs.

The “Biden crime family” therefore exists only in the imagination of the Republican Party – and on Fox News. But even there there are doubts. When James Comer was asked on Steve Doocy’s morning show ‘Fox & Friends’ – God knows not the brightest candle in the American media pie – what concrete evidence he had of a business relationship between father and son, he had to pass. Comer no longer wants to appear on ‘Fox & Friends’.

There are serious reservations even within the Republican Party, and not just among the usual suspects like Senators Mitt Romney and Lisa Murkowski. Even Senator Chuck Grassley, an aging hardliner from Iowa, told CNN that he had “not yet seen any facts that would prove the president was in any way guilty.”

The Republicans are once again seen as hypocrites of the worst kind. The new chairman Mike Johnson, a constitutional lawyer, had warned during the impeachment proceedings against Trump. “In addition to a declaration of war, an impeachment procedure is the most powerful weapon the House of Representatives has at its disposal. (…) We must therefore use it methodically, slowly and carefully, and not abuse it politically.”

This is exactly the kind of political abuse Republicans are committing now. Why do they do this to themselves? The answer is simple and is: on behalf of ‘Orange Jesus’, as Trump is secretly called by the Republicans. The ex-president wants to force impeachment proceedings against Biden by all means necessary. Therefore, he warned the Republican party: “Either you blame the Clochard, or you consign yourself to oblivion. They did that to us too.”

To satisfy Trump’s desire for revenge, Republicans are pursuing an impeachment that will not only get them nowhere but will likely hurt them. The political damage is therefore accompanied by ridicule. Eric Swalwell, a Democratic representative from California, explains with amusement: “I have to give James Comer a little credit. He has proven in more than 50,000 pages summarizing statements from secret hearings that Hunter Biden is the son of Joe Biden.”
