The stolen goods were seized by the police.

Fourteen airport employees have been arrested on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife on suspicion of stealing valuables worth a total of almost two million euros from travellers’ suitcases. According to police information on Friday, their loot consisted of 29 luxury watches, 22 smartphones and 120 pieces of jewelry.

Investigators believe the suspects later sold the stolen valuables. In this context, twenty other airport employees and 27 jewelry stores on the island are being investigated.

The police started the investigation after increasing reports of passenger theft. The thieves were well organized, with a strict hierarchy.

They all stole from the cargo hold

According to the investigation, the thieves struck after the luggage had already been loaded into the hold of a plane. This way they were out of sight of other airport employees and passengers. The thieves are said to have hidden their loot in pockets sewn into the inside of their work clothes or in their lockers at the airport.

Tenerife airport welcomed 10.8 million passengers last year, ranking seventh among Spanish airports. (SDA)
