Since 1959, Switzerland has had the infamous magic formula that determines which parties are represented by how many seats in the Federal Council. The new Federal Council will be elected on December 13, 2023 and the formula will be used again. But do you actually know what the magic formula exactly means?
Anyway, our German writer Helen hears about this legendary formula for the first time this year. And she has questions. Many questions. What exactly does the formula say? What’s the magic? What happens if the formula is not followed – is that even high treason? And is the magical formula perhaps outdated and a new magical concept needs to be found?
