Anyone who loves sweet cold brew coffee, iced tea and frappés has reason to be happy: McDonald’s is expanding its culinary cosmos – and is establishing the new restaurant chain CosMc’s. The menu includes sweet drinks, sandwiches and desserts. The first branch opened Saturday in Bolingbrook, Illinois. British Tiktoker Tanya Michael didn’t miss it – and flew to the US to be one of the first to enjoy the drinks.

The TikToker describes herself as a big ‘McDolald’s fan’ – and that’s why she came all the way. At 6:30, Michael headed to the Chicago suburbs to test out the iconic drinks and snacks. But what’s behind CosMc’s?

Four drive-thru lanes lead to the first CosMc’s location. The fast food giant relies heavily on cold drinks, but also has a few new dishes on the menu. In addition to the well-known classics such as McMuffins and McFlurries, there are McPops (filled dough balls), pretzel pieces and cookies. And the drinks are extensive: Boba pearls like in bubble tea, lemonades with unusual flavors, fruity iced tea, slushies and much more. McDonald’s challenges Starbucks with its new concept. Trendy cold drinks and iconic green straws form the group’s identity.

CosMc’s is a cult figure from the 80s

A total of ten restaurants will be opened in a test phase in the US. “CosMc’s is a small-scale concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s, but with its own unique personality,” CEO Chris Kempczinski said this summer. CosMc drinks are too complex for McDonald’s branches. Kempczinski is confident of success: “It is a $100 billion category that is growing faster than the rest of the industry and has excellent margins.”

McDonald’s brings back the 80’s character with CosMc’s. The eponymous character is an orange alien in a silver suit who appeared in a commercial with the cult clown Ronald McDonald.

McDonald’s wants to attract guests in the afternoon

Whether CosMc’s can compete against Starbucks will become clear during the test phase. The company’s goal is to attract paying customers to its branches in the afternoon – the time when regular McDonald’s restaurants have no customers. In any case, the British woman was convinced of the concept. “It tastes like a cocktail, but without the alcohol,” she says of the “Island Pick-Me-Up Punch.”

In the next step we will also come to Canada, Great Britain, Australia and Germany. Then Michael no longer has to make the long journey to the US.
