Frei is particularly bothered by the fact that the VAR no longer checked the red card against Xhaka. It could “absolutely” be that the expulsion was justified. But: “We just immediately draw red, without thinking. The VAR apparently confirmed it within two seconds. And when the goalkeeper hits our striker in Lugano, it takes forever and ultimately nothing happens. That’s what upsets me. That we just give red immediately. And if it is against us, nothing will be said.”

And he adds: “I don’t care what happened ten years ago, whether there was an FCB bonus or not. For me it’s about the now. And at this point it just annoyed me.”

“Ground attendants didn’t do a great job”

But it’s not just the referees who find themselves in the crosshairs of his angry speech. A lot is coming together at the moment, he thinks. “A lot has disappointed us now. Damn Gotthard is closed for three hours a night. Unfortunately, our groundskeepers haven’t done a great job either – maybe there’s nothing they can do about it, it’s just nonsense. And then you play seventy minutes in the minority in such an important match.”

Since Celestini took office, FCB has seen a clear upward trend. But now Basel’s momentum is suddenly slowed. This also causes a lot of frustration for Frei. “It hurts that the revival we have had is stopped in this way.” (sbe)
