Students against Israel: Because they don’t know what they’re talking about Students convicted of involvement in the murder of teacher Paty in Paris

A survey of American universities shows that many of those protesting the Jewish state have little idea of what they are demanding. Most of them could be reached through education.

‘From the river to the sea’ is a slogan that has been chanted by demonstrators around the world for weeks. This refers to the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea; what is needed is a Palestinian state between the two bodies of water, i.e. the end of Israel.

Do those who talk like that even realize what the slogan means? Ron E. Hassner, a political scientist from Berkeley, California, conducted a survey among American students, the results of which he presented this week in the Wall Street Journal.

According to this survey, only 47 percent of those who support the slogan know which river and sea are actually referred to. Some thought of the Nile and the Atlantic Ocean, others of the Euphrates and the Caribbean.

80 percent deviates from the slogan

It’s hard to imagine anything more stupid than shouting a slogan whose meaning you have only a vague idea of. Nevertheless, the ignorance of those surveyed shows that the situation at the universities is not hopeless: 80 percent of those who were shown with the help of a map that their demand amounted to the destruction of Israel recoiled from the slogan.

Of those who knew they were calling for the end of the Jewish state, 60 percent changed their minds after being told that this would likely lead not to peaceful coexistence in a binational state, but to the subjugation, murder or expulsion of seven million Jews . .

Hassner’s research shows that conditions in American education are dire. However, the complete lack of empathy for the Jews that you would expect from some demonstrators does not confirm this. So not all is lost: what schools and universities have not done, they should be able to fix. (aargauerzeitung.ch)
