Russian President Vladimir Putin (71) is running for re-election in next March’s presidential elections. According to consistent reports from Russia’s three largest state news agencies, Putin announced his decision on the sidelines of an awards ceremony on Friday. According to the RIA Novosti agency, Putin spoke about his renewed candidacy for an officer deployed in Ukraine.

Shortly before, the Central Election Commission had announced that the vote would take place from March 15 to 17 next year. Official confirmation of his candidacy is still pending. Given the continued suppression of the opposition in Russia, a certain victory for the incumbent party is expected.

Opaque choice

In Russia, multi-day elections were introduced for the first time in 2020, officially as a measure to protect voters against the coronavirus. The innovation was adopted during a five-day referendum on constitutional changes.

The referendum at the time also extended the maximum term of office of the Russian president. Putin can therefore legally remain in power until 2036. According to critical observers, the three-day duration of the elections also contributes to making the elections opaque.

Election observers and the opposition in Russia have repeatedly reported irregularities in Russia’s elections and pointed to the Kremlin’s exclusion of independent candidates. (AFP)
