The United Nations announced in New York on Thursday that the meeting was scheduled for 4 p.m. CET. The United Arab Emirates presented a new draft resolution calling for a ceasefire. However, similar initiatives have so far failed due to resistance from the US.

UN Secretary General António Guterres had earlier taken a rare step by urging the UN Security Council to make efforts to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. In a letter to the Security Council on Wednesday, the UN chief invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter for the first time since taking office in 2017. This allows the Secretary General to draw the attention of the Security Council to “any matter which, in his opinion, may endanger the guarantee of international peace and security” and which the UN says has not been used for decades. Guterres received sharp criticism from Israel for this.
