The heads of state of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay have met for a summit of the South American economic alliance Mercosur. The focus of the summit on Thursday in the Brazilian coastal metropolis of Rio de Janeiro was on the controversial free trade agreement with the European Union. However, given the numerous controversial issues, the contract was not expected to be finalized during the meeting.
The agreement would create one of the largest free trade zones in the world with more than 700 million inhabitants. It is mainly intended to reduce tariffs and thus stimulate trade. However, the fully negotiated agreement has been suspended since 2019. The treaty is controversial in both South America and Europe. Some countries want to protect their markets, others fear that labor or environmental standards will be weakened.
