Problems with the Suez Canal again! As various media reported on Wednesday afternoon, the container ship ‘One Orpheus’ lost control in the new Suez Canal. It then collided with the Mansi Bridge. According to Reuters, a rudder was damaged in the accident.
Egyptian media initially reported that traffic from the east was stopped. However, Reuters, citing the head of the Suez Canal Authority, reported that traffic was not restricted by the incident.
The Suez Canal is an important trade route and runs through northeastern Egypt. It connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and therefore also with the global south. About 19,000 ships pass through the Suez Canal every year. The water body is particularly important for Egypt, which earns billions annually from the canal. But the Suez Canal is also crucial to the global economy. When the ‘Evergreen’ got stuck in 2021 and blocked the canal for several days, economic damage amounting to billions was caused. (Mrs)
