Russia prohibits the use of cell phones during classes by law

Russia’s Duma, or House of Representatives, approved a law banning it this Wednesday schoolchildren using mobile phones and tablets with a SIM card during classes.

The deputies, who accepted the document in the third reading this Wednesday, decided to allow the use of cell phones only for educational purposes.

They claimed that students always have the option of using, when necessary, electronic equipment and resources that are the property of the school.

An exception to the law, which will come into effect on September 1, 2024, is that children will be able to use their personal phones in the event of an accident, danger to life or health problems.

The President of the Duma or House of Representatives, Vyacheslav Volodin, assures that there are many parents and teachers who They advocated for this measurewhich, in his opinion, will increase discipline in schools.

The law will “increase the authority of teachers and improve communication in classrooms. This is important given that many children suffer from true cell phone addiction and have communication difficulties,” he said.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Russian authorities have strengthened patriotic education and discipline in schools.

Back in the middle of this year, UNESCO asked schools around the world to ban smartphones in classrooms.

The organization warns that the benefits they provide they disappear when overused or without the guidance of a teacher.

They argue that its use should be aimed at improving learning experiences and for the benefit of students and teachers, not to their detriment.

Data from extensive international assessments, such as those provided by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), indicate a negative relationship between excessive use of ICT and student achievement.
