Now she is suing the American state of Texas: Woman (31) is not allowed to abort a sick child – there is a risk of serious damage

Kate Cox wants to be allowed to have an abortion because her unborn child threatens her health.

Mother of two Kate Cox (31) from Dallas-Fort Worth in the US state of Texas is in the twentieth week of her pregnancy. However, last week she received bad news: the fetus inside her has trisomy 18, a genetic condition.

Severe damage is already visible using ultrasound. The fetus has a twisted spine and irregular skull and heart development. Tragically, the child may not survive the pregnancy – and if it were born alive, it would have only a few days to live.

Doctors advise Kate Cox to have an abortion, but are not allowed to do so due to strict abortion laws in Texas. But the longer the fetus is inside her, the more dangerous it becomes for the mother. Although her life is not in immediate danger, there are serious health consequences the longer Cox has to wait.

The uterus can rupture

If the baby’s heart stops beating, doctors must induce labor. But because of her previous caesarean sections, induction carries a high risk of her uterus rupturing – which in the worst case scenario could lead to death. Or could make her infertile in the future.

“It is not a question of whether I should say goodbye to my child, but when. “I’m trying to do what’s best for my baby and me, but the state of Texas is making us both suffer,” Cox wrote in a statement.

“I don’t want to continue to endure the pain and suffering that comes with this pregnancy,” said Cox, who has been to the emergency room three times in the past month for severe cramping and fluid leakage.

Strict abortion ban in Texas

Now the Center for Reproductive Rights has filed a lawsuit on her behalf against the state of Texas to allow abortion. And we also want to make sure that no one is prosecuted because of this.

In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to abortion. Texas immediately passed a law banning abortion, even in cases of rape or incest. Doctors who perform abortions in Texas face up to 99 years in prison and steep fines. (neo)
