The Arab Remmo clan always makes headlines in Germany. Three perpetrators of the jewel heist in Dresden (from left): Wassim, Rabir and Bachir Remmo.

Power, crime, constant cat and mouse game with the authorities. The Remmo clan is considered one of the largest criminal families in Germany. In November 2019, several masked perpetrators broke into the residential palace ‘Green Vault’ in Dresden and stole works of art and valuable jewelry – containing a total of 4,300 diamonds. The value is estimated at at least 113.8 million euros.

Jewel thieves from Dresden (D) have to go to prison

In 2020, the police arrested six Remmos. The trial took place six months ago. Four men received prison sentences and one was acquitted. Now it’s coming out: the Free State of Saxony has failed in its complaint against the high costs for Remmos’ public defenders, as “Bild” reports.

Taxpayers have to pay

This means: the taxpayers of Saxony must pay the amount. This is calculated based on the value of the stolen jewelry. And the amount is quite impressive: the twelve Remmo lawyers are each entitled to around 120,000 euros. This means: Saxony must pay Remmos a total of 3,842,376 euros.

In cases involving prison sentences, suspects in Germany are entitled to public defenders. In larger cases, two may even be called upon.

There is also money for expenses and accommodation

By the way: the lawyers get paid extra for expenses and hotel accommodation. Legal expert Gerhard Rahn (50) explains to ‘Bild’: ‘The Remmo’s are formally the recipients of the money. They should use it to pay their lawyers. The Free State cannot confiscate it as compensation for missing jewels because there will be orders for the defenders. Saxony now wants to fight for damages in a new civil lawsuit.

The latest development is just one of many escapades surrounding the Remmo clan. The relatively mild sentences have already caused outrage among the German public. Because: A year ago, the gang’s lawyers negotiated a deal with the judiciary. The suspects receive lower sentences for returning some jewelry and confessing. The Dresden Regional Court sentenced the four men to prison terms of four to six years in May.

Meanwhile, the most valuable jewels are still missing. The epaulettes with the Saxon white and the large breast bow of Queen Amalie Auguste, as well as the queen’s necklace and the buttons are missing. The police do not want to give up: “We keep looking for the jewelry until we find the last jewel,” police chief Lutz Rodig (60) told ‘Bild’. (An)
