Charges: A fellow inmate stabbed George Floyd’s killer, Derek Chauvin, 22 times

A fellow inmate stabbed former police officer and convicted murderer of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin, last week.

Following a knife attack on US police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of the death of African-American George Floyd, criminal proceedings for attempted murder have been launched against the accused prisoner. The 52-year-old stabbed his victim 22 times, the Tucson District Attorney’s Office said Friday. He told prison guards that he would have killed Chauvin if they had not acted so quickly.

Chauvin’s fellow inmate attacked the 47-year-old former police officer last week on so-called Black Friday. According to the complaint, he said he wanted to commemorate the Black Lives Matter movement, which is aimed at widespread police violence against black people in the US.

In this case, the 52-year-old faces an additional twenty years in prison for attempted murder. He also allegedly stabbed another inmate more than twenty times.

Chauvin’s condition is unclear

Prosecutors did not mention Chauvin’s name in their statement. However, an official source confirmed to news agency AFP that the victim of the above-mentioned knife attack was the former Minneapolis police officer. No information was provided on Chauvin’s condition after the attack.

In May 2020, white police officer Chauvin pressed his knee into the neck of George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis, for about nine and a half minutes, who was arrested over an alleged counterfeit $20 bill, even though he repeatedly complained that he could no longer breathing. The 46-year-old African-American died as a result.

“I can not breathe”

Floyd’s complaint ‘I can’t Breathe’ – ‘I Can’t Breathe’ – went around the world and became a slogan of the anti-racism movement Black Lives Matter. The case sparked mass protests against racism and police brutality in the US and many other countries.

Chauvin was sentenced in June 2021 to 22 years and six months in prison for manslaughter – in Swiss law this is roughly equivalent to manslaughter in a serious case. A few days before the knife attack on Chauvin, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal of his conviction. (AFP)
