There are currently unusually high levels of radioactivity in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov. Radiation levels in the Ukrainian city are 4.04 microsieverts per hour, 15 times higher than the human acceptable level of 0.3 microsieverts per hour, writes the American news magazine ‘Newsweek’, citing Ukrainian authorities.

For comparison, the radioactivity detected in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is between 0.06 microsieverts per hour and about 100 microsieverts per hour. In Germany, radioactivity is usually between 0.06 and 0.2 microsieverts per hour. Ukraine’s information cannot be independently verified at this time. However, if true, they could have consequences for the health of the population in Mariupol.

Russia speaks of radioactive thorium sand

It is unclear why radioactivity in the region is currently so high. According to Russian social media, heavy storms washed away the top layers of sand on the city beach, exposing radioactive thorium sand. This sand is a natural part of the local coast, the city’s Russian-controlled authorities explained. The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the information to Newsweek.

According to nuclear energy lobbying organization the World Nuclear Association, thorium is a naturally occurring silvery-white metal and slightly radioactive. It is found in rocks and soil and is used in nuclear power plants.

Ukrainian advisor: Missiles are the reason for radiation

However, Petro Andryushchenko, the advisor to the city’s exiled Ukrainian mayor, contradicts the Russian view. According to him, the high level of radioactivity comes from Russian rocket and bomb attacks on the city. “The real reason for the exposed sand and high radiation levels is not the storm, but the Russian occupation.” He accused Russia of committing “ecocide” in the region. The information provided by both parties cannot be independently confirmed.

Mariupol is the first major Ukrainian city to fall during the war. The Russian army surrounded the city under heavy resistance from the Ukrainian army, making Mariupol a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, but also being heavily bombed.
