This process is extremely rare in the US: Republican Representative George Santos was expelled from Congress on Friday after a party-line vote by his colleagues. The reason: The New Yorker has recently attracted negative attention for lies and intrigue. Federal prosecutors have now charged him with 23 crimes, including credit card fraud, forgery and identity theft, enough that Santos could end up behind bars for years.
George Santos has racked up an impressive list of sins. At the very beginning, there were inconsistencies in his resume, which were spotted first by a local newspaper and then by the New York Times. He lied about his high school, his college, his so-called job on Wall Street. He claimed that his mother died as a result of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and that his grandmother died during the Holocaust.
Friday’s decision is historic: Santos is the first person to be expelled from the House of Representatives without first being convicted of a federal crime. (An)
