There are currently freezing temperatures in large parts of Europe. The cold hammer really hits this weekend. The thermometer drops to minus 15 degrees. This means: in several countries people must prepare for icy roads, snowdrifts and frost warnings. Blick provides an overview.

Germany

Frost alarm in Germany. The weather conditions in our northern neighbor are becoming increasingly wintry. Authorities reported numerous accidents on slick and snow-covered roads across the country on Thursday. In some states there was real snow chaos. “Trees are falling like matchsticks,” said a firefighter in the state of Hesse.

And the early winter continues to spread: temperatures drop particularly low in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. Temperatures of minus 14 degrees were measured here on Thursday night, but the freezing temperatures will not stop during the weekend either. It is also icy in Berlin at minus 4 degrees.

At Hamburg airport, icy conditions on the runway caused a plane to skid. Fortunately, the incident ended lightly.

Austria

A warm front with dense clouds will hit Austria on Thursday. Due to the low air mixing, caused by the weak wind, temperatures here also remain in the negative range.

Heavy snow is expected in parts of the Alps this weekend. A low point from Northern Italy turns Austria into a deep freeze. Temperatures of minus 15 degrees are expected in some Alpine valleys on Sunday.

Norway

Three cold records have been broken in the provinces of Nordland and Trøndelag in recent days. The lowest measured value was minus 28.4 degrees. Although low temperatures are not uncommon in the Scandinavian countries, the early timing is surprising.

“The reason for the biting cold is the clear weather over a longer period of time. The lack of cloud cover means the air is cooling,” a meteorologist told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet. It gets coldest inland. It is relatively mild on the coasts because the Gulf Stream transports warm water towards Norway. According to the meteorologist, it is still uncertain how long the cold will last.

Finland

The Finns are actually used to winter temperatures. But the early cold wave also causes surprise in the far north. The newspaper “Iltalehti” asks the question: “Why is it so cold in Finland?”

A cold air current with a lot of wind is blowing over Finland, the national weather service Foreca explains. The current ensures that temperatures in Finland are currently between minus 10 and minus 20 degrees. The situation is particularly precarious in the north of the country: temperatures between minus 25 and minus 30 degrees are expected.

A cold wind is also blowing through the country. According to Foreca, the weather situation did not change significantly in the first week of December.

Great Britain

On Wednesday evening, people in parts of Britain experienced the coldest November night in thirteen years. In low-lying Prestwick, Ayrshire, temperatures fell to minus 5.5 degrees overnight and in the town of Keswick to minus 6.1 degrees. Normally temperatures in November are between 6 and 10 degrees. This cold wave is particularly atypical for this time of year.

Early winter is expected to continue to ravage Europe. You should definitely have a down jacket, a hat and winter shoes on hand.
