Just over a year after a fatal accident, a German court sentenced a speeding driver to life imprisonment for murder. On Wednesday, the chairman Yasmin Kleinert of the regional court of Wiesbaden (Hesse) accused the 25-year-old of treason when he was fully guilty, endangering road traffic and banning car racing without other speeders challenging him.
According to the court, the Syrian drove through several red lights in the center of Wiesbaden at 130 km/h in October 2022 because of the “kick”. A maximum speed of 50 kilometers per hour was allowed there. Ultimately, his car collided with an oncoming vehicle. The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from his vehicle. He died a day later from his serious injuries. He had only become a father a few weeks earlier.
At the start of the trial in June 2023, the suspect, who had no previous conviction, showed remorse. His behavior was not intentional: “I regret it here today with all my heart,” he said at the time. He knows that he cannot undo the events in the autumn of 2022 and offers his support to the victim’s family.
The former refugee from civil war-torn Syria and his four passengers in Wiesbaden, including a child, were seriously injured in the accident on Saturday evening. Researchers have recreated the fatal journey to reconstruct the suspect’s ‘cockpit view’. During the trial, the victim’s widow and relatives appeared as co-plaintiffs. The verdict is not yet final; the convicted person can appeal. (SDA)
