As part of the security measures surrounding the second global refugee forum in Geneva, the Federal Council has decided to temporarily restrict airspace. The military will also support civil authorities with security measures.
The Federal Ministry of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) announced on Wednesday that these measures were necessary because it was a high-level international meeting. Switzerland is obliged to ensure the safety of guests protected by international law.
The global refugee forum, organized by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, will take place in Geneva from December 13 to 15. During and one day before and after the meeting, small aircraft such as sport planes and helicopters are not allowed to fly over the Place des Nations. Commercial flights to and from Geneva International Airport are not affected.
The Federal Council also approved a subsidiary deployment of the army with up to 700 army members as part of an emergency service. The army will support the Geneva cantonal police, among other things, with personal protection. According to the VBS, the army deployment will not lead to additional expenditure for the federal government. (sda)
