Noam Or and his sister Alma were held captive by Hamas for fifty days.

They were the worst hours of her life. Noam (17) and Alma (13) Or were surprised by Hamas’ brutal attack on their kibbutz Be’eri on October 7. The militia fighters kidnapped them to the Gaza Strip. Her mother, Yonat Or, stayed behind. After fifty days, the two were released as part of the hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas.

At home, the teens’ lives fall apart again. They heard that their mother had been killed in the Hamas attack. “The dream of seeing her mother again was shattered by the fact that she was murdered on October 7,” Ahal Besorai, the teen’s uncle, told CNN.

“It was a traumatic moment”

‘My sister is no longer alive. We thought they had all been kidnapped, but that wasn’t the case.”

The uncle talks about the moment of reunion after their release: “When they crossed the border for the first time and saw their grandmother and older brother, they were confronted with the news of their mother’s death. It was a very traumatic moment.”

Meanwhile, Noam and Alma’s father and cousin are still in captivity. The family does not know exactly where. In the CNN interview, Besorai does not reveal exactly what his nephew and niece experienced; he only says that the two were being held in a house in Gaza. There was also a woman who is also from Be’eri.

Compassion for the people of Gaza

Alma and Noam didn’t even know they were going to be released. “They were led out of the room on the pretext of being taken to the toilet. Hamas handcuffed them, blindfolded them and took the siblings to the place where they would be handed over to the Red Cross.

According to B., Noam expressed great sympathy for the people in the Gaza Strip on their way to Israel. “I feel bad. We can go home and they have to stay here,” he allegedly said to his sister.

What surprises the uncle most: despite the incredible tension, the siblings seem “okay.” They would now try to regain their strength and come to terms with their time in captivity. (An)
