“Goals will certainly not be achieved”: Aargau parliament decides to amend the energy law

Fuel oil remains a problem in the canton of Aargau: the Grand Council has decided to amend the cantonal energy law. (symbol image)

The Greens, GLP and SP called for more effective guidelines in the debate. The current amendments to the Energy Act “certainly cannot achieve the objectives”, according to the Greens. Decisive action is needed. The GLP described the government council’s proposals as “toothless”. The SP stated that you are not happy, but that you have to act pragmatically.

The center argued that it was about what was possible and not about what was desirable. The SVP and FDP campaigned for less regulation. The SVP emphasized that fewer bans and more simplicity are needed. The FDP spoke out against unnecessary regulations. After the first discussion, the Grand Council approved the proposal with 79 votes against 54. The no votes came mainly from the SVP faction.

In September 2020, the people of Aargau rejected the revised cantonal energy law with a no vote of 50.9 percent. As a result, the government council presented a slimmed-down revision with the least controversial elements.

The installation of oil and gas heating systems should be limited. The law also stipulates that purely electric boilers will no longer be permitted in the future. Fossil fuel heating should be allowed if at least 20 percent renewable energy is used. This must also be achieved with facade insulation – even though such an energy-efficient renovation took place several years ago.

In view of the second consideration of the proposal, the government council must investigate various matters on behalf of parliament. Then the Grand Council will decide again – and possibly the electorate will vote on it. (SDA)
