Hundreds of thousands flee fighting in eastern Congo No one has ever been younger: Ecuador has a new president

According to the UN, 450,000 people have fled fighting between government forces and militias in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo in the past six weeks. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) spoke on Friday about a worsening of the crisis that has been going on for years in the province of North Kivu.

In the resource-rich region, government forces and dozens of armed groups are fighting for control of the area.

According to the UN, at least 200,000 internally displaced people are currently deprived of humanitarian assistance. Since October, an increase in human rights violations has also been noted in the region, the report said. This includes numerous rapes of women and girls. According to information, tens of thousands of people have reached the town of Sake, about 35 kilometers from the provincial capital Goma.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is the second largest country in Africa. Presidential elections will take place there on December 20. Human rights groups have repeatedly warned in recent months that elections in the country’s conflict zones would be difficult or impossible. (saw/sda/dpa)
