In India, fears persist for the 41 workers in a collapsed highway tunnel. In the meantime, rescuers have used a powerful drill to dig deep into the mountain through the rubble, an expert from Australia who was involved in the work told the Indian news agency ANI. But the machine keeps breaking down and needs to be repaired.
‘I don’t know when they’ll come out. I don’t know how they get out. But I know they will come out.”said Arnold Dix, president of the International Association for Tunneling and Technical Underground Construction. “And we won’t hurt anyone.”
The idea is to push wide pipes into the rubble through which the men can get out. They have been in custody for 13 days. Dix was convinced: the workers were not cold and were supplied with food and medicine through narrow pipes.
The 4.5-kilometer-long highway tunnel partially collapsed on November 12 after a landslide during construction work. The 41 workers are trapped behind huge piles of rubble 200 meters from the entrance. The accident site is near the town of Uttarkashi in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand.
The region is known for its many Hindu temples and is popular as a pilgrimage site and tourist destination. The tunnel was intended to improve transport links there. (saw/sda/dpa)
