After protests: 22-year-old executed in Iran After protests: 22-year-old executed in Iran

Another man has been executed in Iran in connection with the protests surrounding the death of Mahsa Amini, activists say. The execution of Milad Sohrewand took place Thursday in a prison in the western city of Hamadan, according to the Norway-based Kurdish human rights organization Hengaw.

The man was therefore not informed about the impending execution of his death sentence and was no longer allowed to see his family. After the execution, his body was not returned to the family and a funeral was prohibited. Sohrewand was sentenced to death for the alleged murder of a Revolutionary Guards officer during a demonstration in the city of Malayer last November. The Islamic Republic’s judiciary is known for making politically motivated rulings without sufficient evidence.

The International Association for Human Rights (IGHR) talked about it arbitrary death sentence. In the past, human rights activists had accused the Islamic regime in Iran of using executions as a tool to suppress protests and ethnic minorities.

So far, eight participants in the wave of protests sparked by the death of Iranian Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini, including Sohrewand, have been executed. Moral watchdogs forcibly arrested Amini in September 2022 over an alleged ill-fitting headscarf. She fell into a coma and died in police custody a few days later.

According to the human rights group Amnesty International, the Tehran regime’s goal with the executions is “to send a clear message to the world and the Iranian people that it will stop at nothing to suppress and punish dissent.”

Martin Häusling, a Green member of the European Parliament who said he had taken on a political sponsorship for Sohrewand, spoke on the online platform X about the murder of an innocent youth.

At least 680 people have been executed in Iran this year, most for murder or drug offenses, according to the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights.
