George Piano was the victim of a botched operation.

George Piano went to the emergency room at UWMC Northwest Hospital in late December 2022 with severe abdominal pain. There doctors diagnosed him with appendicitis – as a result, his appendix had to be removed.

The time had come on December 6, 2022. The American underwent an appendectomy. “When I woke up and stopped taking the medicine, I was in severe pain,” he told KIRO 7. “It was much worse than what I had when I came to the hospital.” Eight days after the operation, the surgeon contacted Piano and told him something he could hardly believe.

“It’s really terrible”

The doctor had not removed George Piano’s appendix, but rather part of his colon. The inflamed appendix was still in Piano’s stomach and the American now also had a leaky colon. “I suffered from a leaky colon, which caused an infection. And it almost killed me,” says George Piano.

“It was horrific,” George’s wife Betsy remembers. After the failed operation, her husband had to undergo four more operations and had an open wound in his stomach for months. “Seeing someone you love, a family member, go through this kind of trauma. It’s really horrific,” Betsy Piano said.

Lawyer seems shocked

Now the Pianos have filed a lawsuit. “We didn’t want this to happen to anyone else,” says George, explaining the move. “Someone had to put an end to this, take responsibility and say this happened. We must take action to ensure this does not happen again.”

Edward Moore, the couple’s lawyer, explains: “I’ve never heard of anyone being unable to find an appendix.” It is unbelievable the consequences the operation had for his client. The hospital, in turn, assures: “We strive to provide all our patients with the best possible treatment; “Your safety and well-being are very important to us.” (obf)
