Ultra-liberal Javier Milei becomes Argentina’s next president. Milei won the second round election for the presidency in the South American country with 55.95 percent, according to official partial results announced on Sunday evening (local time) after more than 86 percent of the votes were counted. His opponent, Economy Minister Sergio Massa, received 44.04 percent of the votes. Massa had already admitted his defeat to the fans before the results were published.
Massa told supporters in Buenos Aires on Sunday evening (local time) that Milei was “the president that the majority of Argentines will choose for the next four years.” He had already congratulated Milei and wished her luck. Cheers erupted at Milei’s campaign headquarters after the results were announced.
Milei, a 53-year-old newcomer to politics, created a sensation with populist slogans during the election campaign. The political newcomer, who describes himself as an anarcho-capitalist, announced that he wants to abolish the central bank, cut public spending with a “chainsaw” and replace the Argentine peso with the US dollar.
Massa, 51, who was a candidate in 2015, came first in the first round of voting almost a month ago, seven percentage points ahead of Milei. Approximately 36 million Argentines were asked to vote in the second round of elections.
Argentina is experiencing its worst economic crisis in years, and Milei faces major challenges as president. Annual inflation is now 143 percent and the poverty rate is over 40 percent. (AFP)
