Another senior member of the military has been found dead in Russia. As the Kiev Post reports, Vladimir Sviridov, 68, and his wife Tatyana, 72, were discovered in their bedroom on Wednesday. Both have been dead for a week, the circumstances of their deaths are still unclear. However, there was no violence.
According to the Kiev Post, Sviridov headed Russia’s air force and air defense department from 2005 to 2009. He repeatedly criticized the duration of the training. According to Ukrainian media, he said: “A pilot needs 100 hours of flying practice per year to be deployed in combat. That is no longer the case. The average practice time is 25 to 30 hours.” In another interview he reportedly said that the army had too few well-trained officers and that therefore poorer officers were deployed.
Neither the Kremlin nor the Russian media have yet commented on his death. Russian Major General Vladimir Popov called the death “absurd.” “When I heard about his death, my heart hurt,” he told News.ru. It is a shame “that people of this rank, who deserve attention and respect, die in this way.”
Putin’s critics have been dying under mysterious and sometimes unclear circumstances for years. The number of sudden deaths has increased since Russia attacked Ukraine.
In September, a Russian energy executive, Ivan Pechorin, fell from his boat and died. The businessman close to Putin was responsible for developing new resources in Asia and the Arctic. Evgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner group, died in a plane crash after his protest march to Moscow.
