UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman has resigned. The conservative politician confirmed corresponding messages via Twitter on Wednesday. Prime Minister Liz Truss has lost the second cabinet member in just a few days.

Braverman cited “a technical breach” of confidentiality rules as the reason for her resignation. She forwarded an official document from her personal email address to a “trusted parliamentary colleague,” Braverman wrote. Much of it was already known, but it was “just for me to go”.
However, Braverman also criticized the government’s course in the letter. Important promises to voters have been broken, and she is also very concerned about this administration’s commitment to our election platform, such as limiting the total number of immigrants and stopping illegal migration, especially dangerous boat crossings,” Braverman said.
Braverman’s successor is already known. Liz Truss on Wednesday appointed former Transport Secretary Grant Shapps as Home Secretary. Shapps had backed Truss’ rival Rishi Sunak in the internal election campaign to succeed ex-Prime Minister Boris Johnson. He was previously Secretary of Transport in Boris Johnson’s cabinet. He is considered an experienced minister and a persuasive communicator and within a week is already the second newcomer to one of the main ministries.
On Friday, Truss had already fired her finance minister and close ally Kwasi Kwarteng. She replaced him with Jeremy Hunt, who also had experience in various ministerial roles.
Both Shapps and Hunt belong to the more moderate section of the Tory party. Her appointment is therefore seen as an attempt by Truss, who has come under enormous pressure, to unite larger parts of the party behind them. The conservative head of government is fighting for office after she caused financial chaos with planned tax breaks and had to turn around. (sda/dpa)
