Germany is investing billions in charging points for electric cars

Germany will invest billions in the expansion of the charging network for electric cars in the coming years. 6.3 billion euros will be invested in the next three years.

The number of electric vehicles in the country is growing by almost 25 percent annually. Currently, 14.6 percent of all newly registered cars in Germany are electric, according to figures from the German RDW.

“We are a leading car country in the world. That’s why it’s important for us to be prepared,” says Transport Minister Wissing. “We expect an exponential increase in electric vehicles in the coming years and should be prepared for this.”

According to the ministry, there are around 70,000 charging points in the country, including 11,000 fast chargers. This is not enough to cover the current demand.

The goal of the federal government is to have 1 million public charging points available by 2030.
