Drilling work to rescue about 40 workers in a collapsed highway tunnel in northern India has been temporarily suspended. An oil rig flown in specially from the capital New Delhi stopped working on Friday afternoon after a loud bang was heard in the tunnel, news agency PTI reported on Saturday, citing authorities. The noise caused panic among rescuers.
When work was stopped, the machine had already drilled about 24 meters through the rubble. The workers have been trapped behind about 60 meters of rubble for a week. They would be supplied with oxygen, medicine, food and water through existing pipes. We are also in contact with those who are incarcerated.
Experts looked for other ways to save the workers. A second powerful drill from the city of Indore is already on its way to the accident site, but is not yet in use, Indian media reported on Saturday. The newspaper ‘India Today’ reports that research is also underway into whether vertical drilling is possible from the top of the mountain.
While family members initially hoped for a quick rescue, their desperation is now increasing, PTI reports. The prisoners’ voices grew fainter by the hour. Authorities announced on Saturday that they would provide housing, food and medical care for waiting relatives, news agency ANI reported.
The highway tunnel under construction partially collapsed after a landslide on Sunday morning. The approximately 4.5 kilometer long highway tunnel is being built near the town of Uttarkashi in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand – a region with many Hindu temples that attracts pilgrims. (sda/dpa)
