Doctors are amazed: she has two uteruses and is pregnant in both

Kelsey Hatcher – here with husband Caleb – shows her special ultrasound photo.

Kelsey Hatcher (32) from the American state of Alabama is a mother of three children. In the spring she became pregnant again. When she underwent a medical examination, it was revealed that she has two uteruses, and is pregnant in both.

The congenital defect is called uterine didelphys. It occurs in about 0.3 percent of women. According to fertility researchers, the abnormality in the female embryo occurs very early in development, around the eighth week of pregnancy.

Her husband couldn’t believe it

Gynecologist Hayley Miller: “The fact that both ovaries ovulated at the same time or around the same time is quite astonishing.”

Hatcher says her husband hardly wanted to believe her. “He said, ‘You’re lying,’ I said, ‘No, I’m not,'” she told NBC News.

The due date is Christmas. As Hatcher prepares for the arrival of two little girls, the doctors prepare for a challenging task and even add extra staff.

A caesarean section requires two incisions

Women with two uteruses and two cervixes can pose special problems for obstetricians. “I have treated many patients with two uteruses and two cervixes, and it is often difficult to induce labor with two uteruses and two cervixes,” says gynecologist Miller.

The babies can even be born hours or days apart, because the uterus can induce labor independently. Hatcher’s doctors also point out the risk of a cesarean section in a woman with two uteruses. In this case there is more blood loss because two incisions are needed. (no)
