The University of Zurich is bursting at the seams. Space problems and sometimes uninhabited buildings have presented UZH with great logistical and emotional difficulties for years. Because not all employees are happy with the plans for the new room distribution. While some interpret the size of the office as a reflection of its importance, others complain about the distances between the workplace and other university buildings.
Rector Michael Schaepman sees the issue completely differently. When it comes to work, nothing bothers the geographer anymore: he has already moved nine times during his university career in Zurich. He is now setting a good example and has chosen the smallest office in the building at Künstlergasse 15; it was only a third the size of his previous office.
Perhaps this will make it easier for other workers in research, teaching and administration to get closer together. The canton envisages eight to ten square meters of office space per person; However, this is difficult to implement in buildings, some of which are hundreds of years old, because nothing in the floor plans can be changed.
