After relatively quiet weeks, more than 1,300 boat refugees from Africa landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea within a few hours. At least 1,372 new arrivals have been registered since Tuesday evening, authorities announced on Wednesday.
Nearly 400 people crowded aboard one of the boats that had sailed across the Mediterranean from Tunisia and Libya. According to authorities, the migrants come from Syria, Egypt, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The small island is one of the hubs of irregular migration to Europe because of its close proximity to Africa. Yet the crossing with the often barely seaworthy boats is extremely dangerous. People keep losing their lives.
In early September, more than 5,000 migrants landed in Lampedusa in one day. Since then, numbers have dropped significantly. However, in total, at least 146,000 people have arrived in Italy by sea without regular documents since January – 60,000 more than in the same period last year.
