The major strike of actors and actresses in Hollywood recently finally came to an end. After more than 118 days, work can finally resume on numerous film and TV productions that have been at a standstill in recent months. Good news – but also with one or two bangs:
Just a few days ago we reported that as a result of the strike, the upcoming seasons of numerous series will be shorter than planned – including long-running favorites like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “NCIS.” “Young Sheldon“. It has now been announced: the seventh season of the spin-off ‘The Big Bang Theory’ will not only be shorter than planned, but will also mean the end of the series.
The most recent seasons of the series currently available in this country on Netflix (five seasons) and Amazon Prime Video by subscription (six seasons) still contain an impressive 22 episodes, Season 7 will only consist of 14 episodes, premiering in February 2024 and concluding with an hour-long finale in May.
However, this decision did not come entirely out of nowhere, as parent broadcaster CBS extended the format for three full seasons in 2021 – which was then completed with season 7. Moreover, the story is slowly but surely coming to a natural end. And although on the one hand it is of course nice if a format is not artificially kept alive for years until it has passed its peak, it will still be a blow for the fans that there will be no further expansion.
“Young Sheldon”: Here’s how the stars and creators react
For seven years, we’ve been able to watch the childhood of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ nerd Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) before the prequel is completed next year and the series universe ends – assuming, of course, that the creator of the series Chuck Lorre and his team are not already quietly and secretly working on a new spin-off.
One of the first to react to the end of the series on social media was lead actor Iain Armitage:
In his Instagram statement, the young actor thanks the “approximately 200 people” who have made “Young Sheldon” possible over the years and promises not only that there will be as much fun as tears behind the scenes, but also: “We’re making the best seventh season we can!”
The top comment on the post, which includes a throwback photo of the cast, goes to Raegan Revord, who won over audiences as Sheldon’s twin sister Missy: “I can’t stop crying. My family, forever!”
And the producers have already spoken out: “Telling Sheldon Cooper’s story, expanding it and involving the entire Cooper family was an amazing experience,” according to a statement from Steve Molaro, Steve Holland and Lorre. We are grateful to all the fans who have followed the series over the past six years and look forward to sharing the grand finale with the world. However, it will take some time before that happens…
